Scientists used to believe in the blending theory of inheritance which suggested that hereditary traits blend evenly in offspring through mixing of the parent"s blood. Mendel studied heritable characteristics called characters a variation in character is called a trait. Mendel discovered that characters are passed to offspring by genes. Mendel observed that the traits did not blend evenly. 10. 1a- mendel chose true-breeding garden peas for his experiments. Mendel chose the garden pea for his research. Normally pea plants self-fertilize/self-pollinate: sperm nuclei in pollen produced by anthers fertilize egg cells housed in the carpel of the same flower. Mendel prevented self0fertilization by cutting off the anthers and therefore pollen to these flowers had to come from different plants cross-pollination. Mendel chose pea plants that were known to be true-breeding: when self- fertilized they passed traits without change to the next generation.
