Viruses had a huge impact on the human species -> human health. At the end of wwi, we saw one of the largest influenza pandemics. Infected 500 m people: 1/3 of world population. One of the deadliest natural disasters in human history: healthy young adults affected. The worst recorded example is the flu pandemic (an outbreak or epidemic that spreads around the world) of 1918. A strain of influenza virus known as the spanish flue infected almost half of the world"s population, killing about 1 in every 20 people. o. At any given time, 5 - 15% of the global population of people exhibits the symptoms of influenza of the h3n2 subtype by collecting viral material from infected people on six continents between 2002 and 2007. Their analysis revealed almost continuous circulation of h3n2 in east and southeast asia. This regional network of overlapping epidemics appeared to be the source of influenza outbreaks elsewhere in the world.
