Biology 1202B Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Craig Venter, Dna Replication, Cell Membrane
Document Summary
Cycle 1: cell structure: three domains of life: bacteria, archaea, eukaryote. Artificial cell: synthia name of first synthetic cell in 2010 by craig venter, its able to replicate, dna of synthia was created by a computer, able to synthesize a cell with ability to communicate with natural cell. Prokaryote: nucleoid, single circular chromosome, organelle absent, divide by binary fission, unicellular, smaller. Eukaryotes: nucleus, multiple linear chromosomes, organelle present, divide mitosis or meiosis, unicellular and multi cellular, large. Similarities: plasma membrane, cytoplasm, dna as genetic material, ribosomes, not all cells have the same organelles, rbc doesn"t have a nucleus, function of cell dictates types and quantities of organelles. The theory of endosymbiosis: ancestral prokaryote, in folding of plasma membrane creates nuclear membrane, engulfs aerobic bacterium, becomes eukaryotic cell, engulfs bacterium and cyano makes it a plant cell, cyanobacteria first to use oxygenic photosynthesis.
