Document Summary

Wed, jan. 9/19 lecture 2: cell structure and function. Cell theory: all organisms are made of one or more cells, basic unit of all living things is a cell, cells come from existing cells. Cells replicate and individual organelles do not. Prokaryotic cells ate other prokaryotic cells in a symbiotic way: aerobic bacteria provides something to the organism that it did not have before, cyanobacteria --> oxidative photosynthesis, it produced oxygen, , aerobic (use oxygen) bacteria --> Theory of endosymbiosis - aerobic bacterium (mitochondria) , cyanobacterium (chloroplast: morphology, reproduction - binary fission, genetic information - prokaryotic dna, transcriptions and translation, electron transport - only if aerobic, sequence analysis. Why are eukaryotic cells able to grow larger than prokaryotic cells: they have an increase surface area (electron transport) - increasing atp content, eukaryotic cells have more surface area, more mitochondria therefore leading to increase atp production.
