Document Summary

We can define energy as the capacity to do work, ability to move objects against an opposing force (ex. chemical gradient, gravity or moving a chemical reaction towards completion) Energy can be transformed between one form and another (some energy is always lost when converted from one form to another) Energy possessed by an object because it is in motion. >a photon of light is used by plants in photosynthesis. Position of electrons in a molecule, when electrons are held far away from the nucleus they have more potential energy, and as it drops in more energy is given off. Energy can not be created or destroyed, only converted to other forms. The amount of energy in the universe is constant. The total disorder (entropy) of a system and its surroundings will increase. Energy will always become more spread out, it will disperse/move around. Energy transfer in a biochemical reaction is also inefficient.
