Document Summary

If a system undergoes a change of state and as the result it becomes more disordered then the entropy of the system will increase; if the system becomes more ordered, the entropy will decrease. S of vaporization is +ve because a gas is in a more disordered state than a liquid; Similarly, the entropy of the system increases upon melting (fusion) because liquid is in a more disordered state then solid. Biological system is formed with s < 0, a highly ordered system with unimaginable complexity, this is why life cannot be created in the lab. Similarly if the reaction generates gas, then the s of the reaction is positive (entropy increases). In general, the more dilute the system becomes the more entropy it will gain, i. e. dilution increases the entropy of the system (entropy increases when a gas expands into a vacuum isothermally).
