Through time; and this is an ongoing process; islam has diffused into sub-saharan africa bringing its cultural-religious norms; and the influences of those norms on the physical structures of that region. Islamic cities show rational adaptation to drier environments and illustrate the role of religious norms in fostering those adaptations. Islam has a great deal of influence in africa south of the sahara. The influence is religious, political and cultural and it reaches far south into the continent, much further south than one would think.
