Medieval europe"s contacts with the east and the beginnings of exploration. 1400"s- 3 known continents ( asia, africa, europe) Didn"t know how to read maps or where to go get spices or prester john. Equator- go south and it just keep getting hotter. Thought they were trapped and couldn"t get past africa. Romans not interested in travel, due to their ideal location. Britain and france were fighting each other during the time of exploration therefore didn"t have time to explore other lands. Therefore, this left south west area of europe to be discovered. Christians them conquered upwards and pushed into spain. End of 13th century, peninsula mostly taken back by christian. Prince henry 1415 took part in capture of celuta. Important to portuguese puts them on the map. Worked their way down the coast of africa. 1455- looking for rivers to get through africa. Gives portuguese a monopoly of all further conquests to the indies .
