Germany unifies late: 1871: otto van bismark, authoritarian, did not use parliament, late unification plus characterstic of first leader made people assume. Germany was authoritarian and militaristic: late industrialization: 1850, remained agricultural, however, rapid industrialization, took a 3rd of the time vs. other western european countries, rivaling britain and us in industrial capacity by 1900. Geographic position: reason for rapid industrialization, helps with trade, communicate, access markets, what happens in germany affects all of europe, few natural borders making it vulnerable to attack, attack on both fronts, france/russia. 10/22/18: britain wins this naval race with the creation of the dreadnought, germany(cid:495)s navy becomes obsolete, billions of dollars poured in for nothing. End of war: naval mutiny, general strike, near revolution, communists try to take advantage, very violent and precarious, provisional government.
