Yoga and Ayugada
Yoga

Schools of Yoga
• Hatha – physical aspect of yoga, prepares the body for life and transcendence
• Raja – adherence to Ashtanga, focus on meditation
• Bhakli – worship, monks monistaries – this is the type of yoga that they practice
• Jnana – less relhiions, more philosophical aspect of Yoga

Hatha Yoga – posture and exercise
• There are many different styles and it is very popular, like Shtanga, Anada, Bikram,
etc.

Asana Types
• Trend of practicing yoga has increased in professional sports because they find
tangible benefits
Pranayama Yoga
• It is about awareness
• Focus on breathe control
o 3 main types of breathing
▪ Long Deep Breathing
• Chemoreflex receptors: activates to prevent you from over
exerting yourself
▪ Individual or Alternating nostril breathing
• Left or right nostril breathing
▪ Fast breathing
▪ Studies show that breathing has an effect on brain activity
• Qi gong also focuses on breathing – energy manipulation (stuff like this is going to
be on the exam)
• We see that left side of brain is controlling right side of body and vice versa
Meditation
• 2 types of meditation
o Focus Attention
▪ Inhibiting everything else by focusing everything on one object
▪ Like hypnosis
o Open monitoring
▪ Thought to be more difficult to di
▪ Being aware on everything without focusing on one single object
▪ But have nothing pull your attention
• Mantra – Utterance
o Yogic mantra vs. Ave Maria praise Mary
o As you chant and breathe – your speech has an effect on your breathing
o It does not matter what you chant, as long as you chant
