Health policy lecture 17: evidence-based concussion policy: guest lecture. World-wide, approximately 4 million children present to emergency departments (eds) with concussions annually. However, it is estimated that this represents only 12% of children with concussions, suggesting the annual estimate of children with concussions is much larger (33 million) 5 years ago, concussion treatment was to go in a dark room, no phone, no talking. It is now known that this is one of the worst things that you could do for treatment. In ontario, between 2003 and 2013, there were 176, 685 pediatric visits to eds and physician offices for concussions. 4. 4-fold increase between 2003 and 2013, with 35,000 concussion-related visits reported in 2013. Full implementation by january 30, 2015: released by ontario ministry of education in march 2014, applies to all publicly funded elementary and secondary schools in ontario, board policy must address concussion awareness, prevention, identification, management and staff training.
