Health Sciences 4202 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Chronic Condition, Knowledge Translation, High Tech
Document Summary
Disease is often thought about through the medical paradigm. It is now difficult to die from infectious diseases. We have now shifted to a focus on chronic illness because we don"t have a cure for it. It requires constant monitoring, counselling, and intervention. Compression of morbidity involves compressing the time that an individual spends living with the debilitating part of their chronic illness. This includes a higher quality of life and less spent on more expensive procedures. There is a perception that eating healthy is more expensive than eating unhealthy. These behaviours are not always in control of the individual. It is similar to social equity - involves helping people to remove themselves from the struggles that they are facing. People living in rural areas often don"t have the same access to physicians and facilities as those in urban areas. An example is medication for dementia which doesn"t work extremely well, but is a high-tech.
