Kinesiology 2222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Occipital Lobe, Nostril, Lacrimal Gland
Document Summary
If bones were solid, our muscles would have to work extra hard for us to be mobile. The center of the bone is also important for marrow (red and yellow) When we injure bone, we lose the supporting structure this is bad because bones protect important structures. Bones give us mobility due to their organization within the body. Sometimes we sacrifice protection so we can be mobile. Looking specifically at compact bone, we can see a solid piece this is made of up many pillars. Ex: femur has to support entire upper weight of the body: millions of osteons are found here to support this weight. There are many layers within a single osteons called lamellae: lamellae are simply bone material.
