Document Summary

The heart is located in the pericardial sac within the mediastinum (middle region) The pericardial sac is a bag of connective tissue. The heart sits at an angle slightly off to the left side. The heart sits directly between the r & l lung. Divisions of the mediastinum: space in between the lungs. Superior mediastinum: 1st rib (cid:314) sternal angle (so much happens around the sternal angle) Inferior mediastinum: sternal angle (cid:314) diaphragm, anterior, middle (where the heart sits), and posterior. Trachea = comes down posteriorly to the heart to get to the lungs. Parietal pericardium = thick connective tissue that protects heart. Apex of heart = bottom of heart. Diaphragm = sits inferior to the heart. Midclavicular line (go straight down to the nipple to locate heart) Divides the inferior mediastinum into 3 sections by covering the heart. Anchors heart to diaphragm, sternum, great vessels: holds everything together. Contains fluid to prevent friction when heart beats.
