Kinesiology 2222A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Connective Tissue
Document Summary
Skin is mostly made up of non living tissue. Skin is the largest organ in the body. Made up of connective tissue and consists of many organs. Keratinized squamous stratified epithelium (contains keratin: keratinocytes (tough, carry melanin granules) Contains melanin- gives it colour (can vary based on the type of melanin) Protects the dna from uv damage: melanocytes (colour granules, uv protection) Primary site where melanin is produced: merkel cells (sensory) Used for tactile sensory: langerhans cell (macrophages) Scavenger around inside the epithelial, ingest foreign substances. Cell division occurs here, most active cells protected here o. Largest of layers, makes up center of the skin. Made of primarily keratinocytes: granulosum (water proofing, last area of oxygenation too far) Releases a glycoprotein (hydrophobic) that creates a barrier that doesn"t allow water to move through. Keratinocytes start to dye off and release substances which make the waterproofing layer: lucidum (thick skin, dead)
