Document Summary
Sport related concussion is a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces, may be linear or rotational. Linear: (sore at 2 spots: injury at impact site, brain strikes skull on opposite side. Common sx: (high school/uni athletes within 3 days of injury) Rotational: brain strikes skull on other side, brain rotates stretches or tears structures/vessels as it shears of itself. Helmets only reduce force to 40 g. Look at a # of different signs/sx not just one. Symptoms somatic, cognitive & emotional (you can"t physically see these, only pt can report it) Physical signs loc, amnesia, neurological deficits (we can observe these) Cognitive impairment slowed reaction times (good to compare to baseline testing) If sx or signs in any one or more of the clinical domains are present, a src should be suspected and the appropriate management strategy instituted (pull them and do a full investigation).
