Kinesiology 2241A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Patellar Ligament, Tuberosity Of The Tibia, Sternoclavicular Joint
Document Summary
To analyze the biomechanics of msk, look at the system as though it is a machine. Machine: a device or structure that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. Machine that we will consider is the lever. Consists of a long rigid segment and a point of rotation called the fulcrum. Forces applied to rigid segment and the segment rotates about the fulcrum to create a new force. A lever changes the magnitude and direction of forces applied to it. In the msk system, the bones are the rigid segments and the joints are the fulcrums. Recall that muscle force is determined by 3 factors: amount of activation (from brain via motor nerve) Length of the muscle (via the length-tension curve: velocity of the muscle (via the velocity-tension curve) Direction of pull of the muscle is determined by its attachments and wrapping point. The proximal end of the muscle is the origin and the distal end is the insertion.
