Kinesiology 2250A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Hegemonic Masculinity, Misogyny
Document Summary
Increasingly, in some women"s sports as well, narratives of violence can become an important aspect of the sports experience, confirming understandings of what or should legitimately be allowed, or should happen in sports. It is difficult to define the key terms in the segment because very physical forms of behaviour in sports are not often considered problematic, but are in fact often understood as required and necessary. In this understanding, sports would be cathartic for competitors by channelling frustration into socially acceptable forms of aggression. In consequence, the violence and roughness of many sports then began to develop and were seen as acceptable, necessary, or even desirable for their importance in building manly character. In other words, the issue touches on the problem of gender relations and gender power. Sports-related violence: a wider view: beyond a concern with athletes and spectators, we should focus our concerns on a fart broader landscape of harmful or abusive behaviour related to sports.
