Continuum of mental illness, mental health problems, and mental health. Mood disturbances: influences mood regulation beyond the usual variation. **persistent low mood and inability to find enjoyment in activities. Lack of motivation to begin or continue activities. Depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure are primary symptoms. Not driven by physiological causes (eg. drugs) or medical condition (eg. Not driven by physiological causes (eg. drugs) or medical condition (eg. hypothyroidism) 80% to 90% remit within two years of first episode. Symptoms cause significant impairment in social, work, or other important areas. One or more episodes of mania or mixed episodes of mania and depression. Mana can range from pure euphoria/elation to irritability. Excessive involvement in pleasurable activities that are likely to have painful consequences (eg. unrestrained shopping spree, sexual indiscretions) Highly familial prevalence ( ie. stronger genetic component) Duration of approx 2 years for adults. Woman twice as likely to be diagnosed as men.
