Superficial involves epidermis and possibly superficial dermis. Partial thickness wound extends into dermis but doesn"t severe it entirely. Superficial and partial thickness will re-epithelialize without direct intervention: clean & dress. Steri-strips and butterfly bandages are effective for superficial and partial thickness injuries where opposing epidermal edges can be brought together. Full thickness injuries can be sutured as long as the 2 sides can be approximated (8hrs max!) If you cant approximate edges send to hospital. Petechiae (<3mm) & ecchymosis (>3mm: if unsure, investigate any petechiae. Ice (slow bleeding) and compression (prevent blood from clotting) asap: may need to relieve pressure. Soak in warm water to soften tissues (makes skin pliable) (cid:498)tease(cid:499) tissue back from nail with manicure stick. Avoid rounding so that margins don"t penetrate the tissues on the side.
