Document Summary
Likes to live in skin and anterior nares. Being colonized by s. aureus: more likely to get infection with that strain, but if you do get infected, outcome is better than somebody who is not colonized by s. aureus. Someone who doesn"t carry s. aureus will have a worse outcome. Colonizers have a better prognosis because you have immunity of the strain you"re carrying around. Another 30% will be colonized because of spread; and another 30% won"t be colonized at all (we don"t know why this is) Likes to live on skin (skin is poor environment for most organisms as it"s constantly turning over, is dry, and has high levels of salt, but s. aureus is resistant to high levels of salt) Despite the fact that it doesn"t cause infections in some people, it"s still the leading cause of nosocomial infections. Invasive = can isolate the organism from a place that"s supposed to be sterile (e. g. tissue, organ)
