Causes strep throat and invasive streptococcal disease (flesh-eating disease), which is as aggressive as the bubonic plague. 3 diff types of hemolysis: alpha, beta, gamma. B-hemolytic is the complete clearing of blood cells around the bact a-hemolysis is partial hemolysis, (top left) and it appears green. Puerperal sepsis happens after birth in women and children. Factor h = host protein, part of the complement system. Factor h protects your own cells (binds own cells) to protect yourself from complement system. So m protein binds to factor h to protect itself from complement. You can bind to m protein antigen, but there are diff serotypes, as its n-terminus is hypervariable. So if you got infected with m1, m18 can now infect you. B-hemolysis, caused by streptolysin s, used clinically for decades. Streptolysin o: doesn"t give pattern but still kills those cells.
