Mechatronic Systems Engineering 3301A/B Lecture 31: Process Selection 3

Document Summary

Can either select material then process, or process then material. Stringent requirements in any process parameters usually make process selection dominant. For large quantities and no strong process requirements, can chose material first. Ces or tables can allow screening process by material class/family. We want to make a lightweight thrust chamber for a space vehicle. We have not decided on a material, but have very strict tolerances on the entire interior of the part (< 50 micron), along with a complex, hollow 3d shape. It is large, and our goal is to minimize the mass while conforming to the tolerances provided. However, we find that these cannot make the thinwalled, hollow, 3d structure we require. Just as our material charts showed us rough material information, so do these process charts. A database (ces) can give us much more detailed information.
