A big part of the rising middle class: functional religious music. Religious music that is designed to serve some purpose in the liturgy/religious setting. Verdi"s requiem, schubert"s masses, berlioz"s religious works: works for chorus and orchestra ex. Most common type of music in this category is the oratorio. Dramatic work intended for concert performance separate from religious practice (not fro religious ceremonies) Amateurs, influence of the middle class etc play extremely important role. Led to the growth of amateur choirs (began as an opportunity for socializing) Choral music is the most conservative, least home for innovation.
