A skill innate for some individuals; not for others: those who do not have awareness can be difficult to interact with themselves. Cannot get to know them well when they do not know. Understanding what one is made of and what one wants to make of it. A dynamic multidimensional, introspective process used to become aware of, scrutinize, & understand one"s thoughts, feelings, convictions. & values with the outcome being conscious forethought prior to behaviour/action. The use of self-insights and presence knowingly to guide behavior that is genuine and authentic to create a healing interpersonal environment . Self-awareness: fundamental for the nurse, leads to greater competence. The self has been of great interest to philosophers, theologians, psychologists and scientists. Socrates, plato and aristotle some of the earliest scholars of the mind debated the existence/location of the mind the seat of self- awareness : thought it was in the heart.
