The major factor that determines preload is venous return (blood that enters ventricle during diastole) Another factor determining preload is ventricular compliance - this is elasticity or amount of. Afterload: the amt of resistance to ejection of blood from a ventricle. Contractility: the force of ventricular contraction- related to the number and state of myocardial cells. Brous tissue = more ventricular pressure = increased workload on heart = heart failure (hf) Hf is the inability of the heart to pump suf cient blood in order to supply tissues with adequate nutrients and oxygen. Clinical syndrome characterized by s&s: uid overload or inadequate tissue perfusion. These dysfunctions may or may not cause pulmonary or systematic congestion. Hf is usually a progressive disease- modi able by lifestyle changes and medication to prevent acute episodes.
