Document Summary

Lecture 2 notes - magnetic forces on moving charges. Today we"re going to be looking at the motion of charged particle in a uniform magnetic field. We"re going to explain the cyclotron radius and cyclotron frequency. We"re also going to be looking into the motion of a charged particle in crossed electric and magnetic fields. The magnetic force never does any work since the displacement due to how force is at a perpendicular angle to displacement (velocity of the particle in this case) Well that means that the force will have no effect on that sideways motion! The only motion due to the force will be in the direction perpendicular to the already going velocity. However, unlike projectiles, this occurs in three dimensions so we have to take in the account the direction of the b (the direction of the magnetic field. Well we know only the perpendicular component will change.
