Document Summary

Literature that survives tends to be literature of upper class. Little says there"s 2 types of economy. Gift economy: money not goals -> does not define honour, status and honour are what are important. You spend the gifts to reveal and receive more status and honour. Conspicuous consumption: display and consume your wealth. Conspicuous giving: establish and maintain your relationships with other people. You give to your followers, gods, dead, enemies and allies. Through doing this, you build your resources because friends are a resource (insurance) Reciprocity: giving a gift comes with an expectation of getting a gift back. A failure to return will create a rupture of social class. Non profit economy: wealth is driven by money. Money is a piece of technology that facilitates exchange and accumulation. Hobbes: money allows people to get rich. Emporos: merchants doing it for a living/to make money. Prexis: good merchants, aristocrats, make exchanges involving necessities for polis (iron, wine, slaves).
