Homeric solution was to let the sword swingers run the place, let it be an honour society. However, this was not good with plato either. Too militaristic, too much of a warrior society. The homeric solution creates instability, macho culture is dangerous culture. Usually theorists are somewhere in the middle, but plato is further to the side of nature creating us. We are born a certain way, with certain qualities and these qualities are our destiny. Some qualities may change slightly but not dramatically. Plato says we may become worse because of the effects of society. Attempting to overturn your inner self is a sure way to be unhappy. It leads you away from the good life. To have a good life you need to be who you are, the political system must not lead us away from who we are. Human nature: humans have a soul - something that exists beyond the physical, that soul is immortal.
