Political Science 2237E Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Civil Religion
Document Summary
Normal humans want to live and are selfish. Our reason and desire are different entities. Reason is a servant of our desires. Use reason to build political institutions that will satisfy our, and other people, desires - otherwise, life that"s solitary, brutish, nasty and shore. Those who you admire are likely not better than you. Men and women are not that different. There is a wall between us and world. We interact through media - media are our sense. Hold idea -> turns into memory -> having a memory and linking it to other memories. We see things through image - words come later. Building block of thought and our lives. Sensations -> name -> assertions about relations. No such thing as non-material things, world is made of atoms. Sensual is matter that is pressured on us. Dominated by sensation - how can we make choices if everything is linked to constant matter in motion.
