Equality of man - assisted w/ french revolution. Rejects glorification of reason that occurs during the enlightenment. He believes we are by nature sentimental beings. Disagrees - selfish and violent man hobbes describes is not the natural man; it is already corrupted by society. Rousseau: hobbes + locke misrepresent state of nature - man they describe is already corrupted by society. Rule/spoilage for locke is that you can only take as much as you can before it goes to waste. Rousseau says there is no natural right to property. Natural man is governed by (natural form of self-love independent of opinions of others) + pitie (compassion + sympathy for fellow man) Societies emerge, man develops (corrupting form of self-love which depends on opinions of others) This causes man to become competitive, selfish + violent. Corrupting self-love develops in society - doesn"t exist in nature. Current social contract (described by hobbes, locke) is illegitimate.
