The human brain has been evolving for almost 500 million years. Brain stem ( older structures) shared with other lower-order animals. More recently evolved structures (cerebrum) are built atop structures from our distant evolutionary past. Where the spinal cord enters the brain it enlarges to form the stalk-like structure of the brainstem. Nerve relay between spinal cord & brain. Contralateral control (left hemisphere controls right side of body, right hemisphere controls left side of body. Nerve relay between higher and lower levels of the nervous system. Bridges between higher and lower centers of the nervous system, regulate sleep, muscle control in face, damage = death. Muscular motor co-ordination for fast, reflexive involuntary movements. State of wakefulness (alertness or sleep for sustained periods of time. Coordinated behaviours needed to satisfy urges and motivational and emotional urges arising in the hypothalamus. 2/3 cm thick sheet of cells that form the outer layer of the human brain.
