Document Summary
Psychodynamic perspective: personality is an energy system, psychic energy: generated by instinctual drives pressing for release. Present at birth, unconscious, functions irrationally, basic biological urges like eating and sex. Second to develop, id has no contact with reality so it needs the ego, serves and controls the id, is the "executive of personality" balances the superego and the id. Intellectualization: situation treated as intellectually interesting event: conversion: conflict converted into physical symptom. Free association: freud opts for this over hypnosis, patient is to say anything no matter how trivial, embarrassing or unrelated. Evaluating psychoanalytic theory: most propositions have not held up in research, difficult to make clear cut behaviour predictions, unconscious processes have been proven important but are very different from freud"s suggestions. Subconscious processing: semantic priming effect: repression: memory lapses during therapy. Evidence against freud: dreams: dreams don"t necessarily represent desires, anthropological evidence: the oedipus complex is not culturally universal.
