Document Summary
Psychotherapy based on principles of classical or operant conditioning. Problem is viewed as error or failure in learning. Simple phobia: intense, irrational dear of object or situation, relatively common, anxiety disorder. Patient is still in touch with reality. Flooding: fear viewed as conditional response, so extinguished by repeated, patient is continuously presented with fearful object, until it no longer produces a response. Patient must be willing to expose self to fear for prolonged intervals. Not always possible; like pushing someone off the building. Limited value kind of treatment, the only one that works well is for the sensation of smoke. Flood yourself with smoking, and you"ll be sick of cigarettes. Implosion: patient must continuously imagine fearful situation. E. g. , think about being in a room full of snakes. Difficult to do; and the person must be willing to do it. It is way safer and the person might be more compelled to do this.
