Document Summary

Psychotherapy based on principles of classical or operant conditioning. Problem is viewed as error or failure in learning. Intense, irrational fear of object or situation. Patient is still in touch with reality. Fear is viewed as cr, so extinguished by repeated presentation. Patient is continuously presented with fearful object, until it no longer produces a response. Patient must be willing to expose self to fear for prolonged intervals. E. g. think about being in a room full of snakes. Replace cr of fear with a more pleasant response. Pair the feared object (low intensity) with the positive ucs-ucr. Gradually increase intensity of the feared object. E. g. picture of real snake, snake plushie, real but really small snake, big snake. Feared object now result in positive cr. Must build the intensity up slowly, (prevent the ucs to be linked to the fear instead) Train client in muscle relaxation on cue. Client imagines fearful situation; receives relaxation cue.
