Document Summary

Psychology 1000 lecture 41: freud ii march 15, 2016. At first, the ego only has to worry about external reality. Soon superego begins making demands as well. Superego is beginning to control ego by giving reward for compliance and punishment for non-compliance: pride = reward, guilt = punishment. Id and superego are infantile- formed when child was young: id is unreasoning, superego is irrational. If ego obeys superego: id may not be satisfied. If ego follows id: superego may punish. Above the water is the conscious mind. Below the water (largest portion) is unconscious. Ego has a portion below and a portion above the water so it can communicate with both sides. Superego has a little bit of consciousness but mostly unconscious. Interaction of id, ego, and superego result in constant struggle anxiety. Fear of real world threats: neurotic anxiety. Fear of id"s desires: moral anxiety.
