Retrieval, memory failure, false memories, biology of memory. Spreading activation theory assumes ltm is a network of associations: what"s the 1st word you think of, when i say fire engine ? thinking about one things activates related concepts, concepts that are more closely/strongly linked -> more activated. Retrieval cues anything that activates a concept/info stored in ltm presumably work through spreading activation. Mirror tracing = retrieval cue for the other concepts: links are bi-directional (hearing the letters h. m. could activate concept of mirror tracing ) Good retrieval cues self generated cues: this is how i remember it humorous/distinctive cues, tends to make them more memorable . Multiple cues: better chance of remembering at least one of them. Well-rehearsed cues: stronger link (i. e. shorter distance between concepts in our mind) Memory is best when conditions during retrieval are the same (or similar to) conditions during encoding: context/state/mood acts as a kind of retrieval cue.
