Social perception: the study of how we form impressions of other people and make inferences about them. One important source of information that we use is non verbal behavior, such as facial expressions, body movements, and tone of voice. Eg. people (cid:449)ho ha(cid:448)e (cid:862)(cid:271)a(cid:271)y fa(cid:272)es(cid:863) a(cid:396)e (cid:396)e(cid:373)i(cid:374)is(cid:272)e(cid:374)t of those of small children, with big eyes, a small chin and nose, and a high forehead- tend to perceived as having childlike traits. Eg. seeing photographs able to judge sexual orientation. People are also accurate in identifying cats emotions, dogs can also read humans emotions. Nonverbal communication: refer to how people communicate, intentionally or unintentionally, without words. Facial expression, tone of voice, gestures, body position and movement, use of touch, eye gaze. Non verbal cues serve many functions of communication, help people express their emotion, attitudes, and personality. Non verbal cues also play a role in eliciting empathy. We automatically mimic others facial expression such as happiness, sadness, and disgust.
