Psychology 2210A/B Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Hermann Ebbinghaus, Spatial Memory, Cognitive Map
Document Summary
More precisely the mental processes of acquiring and retaining information for later retrieval (ashcraft & klein, p. 9) Given this definition, it is difficult to think of any cognitive process that is independent of memory. hard to separate learning from memory (kinda have to incluude learning in order to test memory in animals) The british empiricists discussed rules of association as part of their philosophy, but never performed experiments to determine if these rules were valid. Hermann ebbinghaus tested how association are formed, using nonsense syllables. Ebbinghaus studied lists of nonsense syllables (ex: ped, koj) under various experimental conditions, then tested his ability to recall them. Allowed him to determine if the strength of association increased with training, if items close together are associated more closely than those far apart, backwards and forwards associations. To categorize cats vs. dogs, or different types of dogs, we first need to remember different types of animals. The same holds true for other cognitive processes.
