Document Summary
Lecture 7: surveys - to determine attitudes of ppl on particular questions, to determine the effect of natural events / to look for patterns of cause & effect among many variables. Sometimes people do not know/don"t want to tell truth/unsure how to communicate. Individual difference: some are better at knowing their attitudes dont always predict behaviour - inconsistent. Survey research: what variables can be used, generating theory systematic. Sample = true to population, unlikely to have good sampling procedure yet its different from population. 2 distinct forms: 1) exploratory: used in new research where no theory has developed (descriptive: explanatory: looking for evidence of cause-effect relations among variables. Looking for evidence: test hypothesis for cause since correlation does not mean causation looking for correlation: test & give theory a chance to be wrong. 3 characteristics: procedure: replicable/standardized- standardized procedure removes info about researcher; Research questions: theoretical construct necessary for building survey, be speci c about it.
