Document Summary

An element only contains one type of atom (periodic table; hydrogen, helium, etc) I. e. atomic number of helium is 2, so there"s 2 protons for helium. Know the difference between atomic number & atomic mass. Isotopes: i. e. carbon has 6 protons & it can have either 6,7,or 8 neutrons (different isotopes; neutron number is different) Electrons orbit the nucleus (the negatively charged electrons orbit them) An atom that has lost an electron is positively charged (i. e. h+) An atom that has gained an electron is negatively charged. Order of increasing atomic number from left to right row. Electrons are organized around a nucleus; in an orbital/shell surrounding the nucleus. The rst shell can only be lled up to 2 electrons, if there"s more, then it has to go to the next orbital (the second orbital can contain 8 electrons) In all members of the group/family have the same number of valence electrons in the outer most shell.
