Monday march 19th more guest speakers - called meaningful work and creative industries (tell
erin about this) → recent grads of usually comm → eg social media content producer at shopify

● Discussed issues with jobs in creative economies
● What are individuals doing to try to create more sustainable jobs - people push back and
try to resist precarity
● Must ask ourselves - what are the alternatives?
● Must shift our assumptions that working people in general are not passive victims of
these problems
● Examples of pushback
○ Intern rights activism - canadian intern association has prompted legal changes
○ Independents unite - NYC, offers benefits for self employed ppl etc
○ Coworking - spaces where freelancers come together to share cost of basic
business amenities and remove isolation aspect, meet other people thru which
they may find gigs
○ Turned to labour unions - ways to bargain with employers, improve conditions
and build collective power

Problems with sharing economy model
● Eg uber, air b n b, task rabbit where someone does gig for you
● Health and safety issues
● By law, people who perform gig are classified as independent contractors (meaning
employers do not have to meet expectations under law for traditional employees like
minimum wage)
