CLASS
Discussed issues with jobs in creative economies
What are individuals doing to try to create more sustainable jobs - people push back and
try to resist precarity
Must ask ourselves - what are the alternatives?
Must shift our assumptions that working people in general are not passive victims of
these problems
Examples of pushback
Intern rights activism - canadian intern association has prompted legal changes
Independents unite - NYC, offers benefits for self employed ppl etc
Coworking - spaces where freelancers come together to share cost of basic
business amenities and remove isolation aspect, meet other people thru which
they may find gigs
Turned to labour unions - ways to bargain with employers, improve conditions
and build collective power
Co-operatives
Type of business
Problems with sharing economy model
Eg uber, air b n b, task rabbit where someone does gig for you
Health and safety issues
By law, people who perform gig are classified as independent contractors (meaning
employers do not have to meet expectations under law for traditional employees like
minimum wage)
