Steps toward union more marked by economic pragmaism than grand idealism. Treaty of rome (march 25th 1957) oicially established eec. Jarausch (p. 518): irony is that eu likely saved european naion states. In parlance: nato did defense, eeu did economy and states did social welfare. Increased success by 1960s prompted largest states to minimize role of eu. France twice vetoes gb"s request to join eec (gb wants in ater 1961) Eec renamed ec in 1967 (gb joins in 1973)
