The origin of trench warfare in the first world war. Then 100 million people were added between 1870 and 1914. The power of the state o: there was a couple critical developments which changed politics. Russia: european bureaucracies became even more effective than they were before. The dark side: states were policing their societies more than before and there were police forces used to keep order in the society: the 19th century european state became more involved in promoting and inculcating (instill/teach) nationalism. Its origins were found in the franco-prussian war of 1871. Each year a proportion of 20 year old men would be called up for active service in the army for 2 (infantry) to 3 (artillery or cavalry) years. Even after discharge they still had a task for the government. These men would become part of the reserves for 5 years. While they were in the reserves they were responsible for annual training.
