How do they re ect the changing environments of the 19th century: public and social health/ muscular christianity. 19th century transformation: how does sport go from a disreputable activity to a cornerstone of modern society, sport build characters that lead to physical perfect. No longer views as a source of temptation. Extension of moral power expressed in the display of physical courage. The rationalization of physical activity: apply enlightenment tenets of reason to sport. Rule/role specialization/ time keeping and records: response to urban environment. Time and space constrains of the urban environment: ie baseball over cricket. Public and social health movements: sport cures health and social problems caused by an industrialism. Health concerns- for the poor: dirty polluted living quarters, malnutrition, lack of green space.
