The history of rock is the amalgamation of diverse musical genres followed by the splintering of those styles into sub-genres. The hippie aesthetic refers to an idea that a rock musician is an artist who has a responsibility to produce sophisticated music using whatever means are at their disposal. That rock should stand up to repeated listening and the lyrics should deal with important issues and themes. Sub-genres are often categorized based on their instrumentation, the technology used, the sounds or tones of the instruments, the costume of the artists, their geographic origin, their lyrical themes or their sonic characteristics. The hippie aesthetic can be illustrated looking at led zeppelin their music was a clear extension of blues-based rock from the 60"s. Typically, they are now referred to as a proto-metal or hard rock band.
