MU158 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Countertransference, Therapeutic Relationship, Colin Lee
Document Summary
Aesthetic experiences in music central to therapeutic process. Clinical application of seminal works and orchestral instruments. Clinical improvisation as composition (form), often aaba form. Repeating/responding to client"s motifs/the tones they"re drawn towards makes them feel listened. Repeating makes them feel validated, sense of continuity. The genesis of where client and therapist are going with musical process. Time consuming way of analyzing what clients are doing. Ex jimmy clapped rhythmically 15 mins into session . 3 classifications: what is client doing non-musically? (physical interactions, verbal etc) what are they doing musically? (what pitches, rhythms etc) Session was one long improvisation 43 minutes long. Piano started with open intervals, as client"s playing became more intense the piano followed suit. Times where client listens and absorbs, and times when they are active in music making. Playing instruments in non-traditional forms (ex using piano wood as drum, plucking strings on inside) Combination of being in the music together but taking it a step further.
