PO301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Justice As Fairness, Private School, Meritocracy
Document Summary
Po301 lesson 2 of whether this scheme itself is to be designed in accordance with the difference principle or some other criterion. Maybe de facto expectations even in unjust structure have some legitimacy if people have made choices on their basis, eg choice to work hard to get an mba. 2: people who do particularly dangerous, stressful, dirty, boring work etc deserve to earn more than those whose work is safe, comfy etc - extra reward therefore equalising. 3: idea that brain surgeons deserve to earn more than nurses because if they didn"t nobody would want to be a brain surgeon. Consequentialist reason, not a desert claim - maybe they won"t be brain surgeons because they are too selfish - blackmail, cf cohen. Could be compensating differential claim if being a brain surgeon is more burdensome. Recent public concern about state welfare going to people who are undeserving. Attempt to divide people into scroungers and strivers.
