PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Freudian Slip, Sigmund Freud, Psychosexual Development
Document Summary
Motives and desires lie buried beneath the surface. Dynamic because the forces are pitted against each other. Humans want to seek pleasure and avoid pain and development starts from there. We accept rules for behaviour, ethics, rules from our parents and internalize them. Civilized in order to prevent our savage behaviour. The drive for sexual gratification is the number drive in human beings. Conscious: whatever you are aware of at any given moment. Preconscious: out of awareness but can be recalled (long-term memory) Subconscious/unconscious: primary motivating force of behaviour, repressed memories, instincts and wishes not allowed to enter consciousness. Psyche is the sum of id, ego and superego. Ego cannot always control id = conflict, this causes anxiety when impulses of id threaten to get out of control. Defence mechanisms: weapon of ego, distortions of reality, satisfy the id, unconscious, prevent impulses of immediate gratification of id from getting out of control.
