PS101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Fundamental Attribution Error, Theophrastus, Situation Two
Document Summary
Theophrastus wrote about different characters to try to describe individual differences. Distincive and relatively enduring ways of thinking, feeling and acting that characterize a person"s. The fundamental attribution error: my behaviour is situation, other"s behaviour is driven by traits. Measuring personality can be tedious because it is often subjective. Personality scales items interjudge reliability: a high level of agreement among observers is required structured set of standardized questions. Use standard questions and agreed upon scoring key. Based on theoretical conception of trait issue: have to identify what are the underlying traits that describe people. Idea that we accept that there is a personality trait, we don"t know how many there are. Developed a method that determined how many traits there are. Inherently related to correlation: the inverse of correlation. Research gave way to more modern tests with fewer traits. Based on responses by "normals" and psychiatric patients.
